Enjoying your favorite movies, TV shows, listening to your favorite tunes after a long day’s work, or simply going through some old pictures can be done offline, but you need some kind of application to handle them all. If you can’t really decide, you might want to try out Free Player, which also comes with a built-in multimedia converter.
The visual design manages to get your attention right from the start, with a custom-made interface that’s clean, and intuitive, letting you get started right away. A playlist can slide in from the side to add more files, while the converter neatly snaps to the main window, although acts as a separate component.
Unfortunately, you can’t just drag files over the main window, but the diversity and abundance of file formats it supports lets you easily overlook this inconvenience. For both playback and conversion, you can work with files like AVI, FLV, 3GP, MKV, MOV, MP4, PSP, RM, RMVB, SWF, WMV, WMA, WAV, MP3, MP2, AC3, AAC, and OGG, with additional support for most common picture formats.
Playback doesn’t benefit from any extra enhancements, with a straightforward approach and options to configure volume, play, stop, or skip through content with the progress slider. Sadly, the playlist can only be used once, getting discarded on exit, and no option to save it to file, or read corresponding files for that matter.
The converter is powerful enough to fulfill most demands, at least when it comes to output type. Only one file can be processed at a time, with one of two built-in methods. The first simply has you select from the list of supported formats, while the second is dedicated to experienced users, with more in-depth quality settings, resolution options.
All things considered, we come to the conclusion that Free Player can be a suitable replacement for the multimedia program you’re already using, or a neat candidate if you don’t yet have a preferred one. Although it lacks some comfort features like hotkey support, or more playlist management options, both of its components make it worth a try overall.
